How to Create Content

Creating content on EICN can be as simple or as complex as you like. The bare minimum needed to do to create content is:

  1. Click on Create content.
  2. Click on the type of content you want to create (most users will only be creating pages).
  3. Fill in a title
  4. Fill in some text for the body.
  5. Hit "submit."

Those are all the steps needed to create a simple page. However, once you navigate away from this page, there's a good chance you won't be able to find your way back, because your page isn't linked to anything yet.

To link your page to other pages in EICN, click on Menu Settings (On the editing page, it's one of the options if you scroll down.)

You'll see a few fields that ask for:

  • Title: The name to display for this menu link. Try to keep this name restricted to one or two words.
  • Description: The description displayed when hovering over a menu item. This is where you can fill in whatever you couldn't fit into the title.
  • Parent item: Select from a drop-down list of which menu item this link should follow
  • Weight: Optional. In the menu, the heavier items will sink and the lighter items will be positioned nearer the top.

What does "Parent Item" mean?

The EICN menu system is similar to the way folders are arranged on your computer. Notice how next to "Home" there is a gray circle, but next to "Equipment," there is a black triangle. The gray circle next to "Home" indicates that if you click on "Home," there are no further relevant links for you to click on.

However, if you click on Equipment, which has a black triangle next to it...

The menu expands, and shows you links to equipment. Note that the menu item "Titan Krios" has yet another nested item that appears when you click on that link.

Great, so what's that got to do with "Parent Items"?

In our example, "Equipment" would be the "Parent Item" of Titan Krios. If I created a page about another piece of equipment, I would select "Equipment" as the parent item. If I created a page about our publications, I would select "Publications" as the parent item.

Whatever category you feel your post falls under, that would be the "Parent Item." If your post does not fall under any category, select "Navigation." However, you might want to consider its relevancy - if the information you're posting does not fall under any parent item, it might be better to post it to your blog.
